Have you ever tried to start studying for an exam but lacked a foundation for studying habits and stopped studying because you got bored or uninterested?
When you got to college, were you appalled that you had to take the same classes you did in high school?
Were you smart enough for college but because Middle School and High School were so boring that you didn’t try hard enough and did not have the grades to get in?
If you answered yes, don’t be ashamed. This is probably half of the population, if not more. We are taught the “foundation” subjects in school such as math science, history, etc. Which is great information, but very rarely are we taught how to learn and told why we are learning these materials.
I remember going through the school system and wondering why I needed to know how to write an essay, or learn how to divide long numbers, or why I needed to know what happened in 800 A.D or B.C. This is no blame to the teachers, bless them for doing the job that not everyone can do. But I believe that it is the system that was put in place however many years ago that started the school system.
It would be much better for our society if we implemented schools that taught us more important things that would benefit our kids to run the world that we leave behind. Teaching them things like: how to practically apply the information handed to them, how to sell something, how to handle being rejected, how to control their emotions.
I know what you are thinking…that is the parents job or they will learn through life experiences. I would agree that this is valid, but how many kids grow up with one parent or both parents work all the time, or no parents at all and get sent to a foster home, or a daycare center or the parents just don’t have time or the want to teach their kids these things. So then the kids grow up thinking they are on their own, which can lead to great things or really bad things. I would much rather have the piece of mind knowing that those kids were taught how to handle being rejected than be afraid to ask for anything or push themselves to be greater. Or taught how to cope with certain situations, as opposed to take it out on a vulnerable kid and bullying them until they commit suicide.
I know that these examples are a bit extreme but if you look at our world today, its not too far off. I think that these social situations are a direct reflection of how we were taught our “foundations” in school. We are taught how to take order, memorize answers so that we can be put into a class of smart, average, or a failure. Taught how to pay attention to a class that we are not going to use unless we are asked about that one date that happened 100 years ago that helped us celebrate a holiday that we get drunk and blow fireworks for.
Something has to be done so that we take control of our country and world as a whole. Our future generations depend on a change now! We cannot keep repeating this cycle of memorization and regurgitation of useless information. We need to teach our kids like they are adults or else some of them will stay kids forever and won’t move this country and world forward to progress.
That is my rant on the school system and why I think we need to go back to the basics and really find out what our foundation really is. So that when we teach it to our children, they will have a foundation to build upon in a way that they can progress our country and world to a better, brighter future.
Thank you for reading and as always, Control The Basics
